Teddy Wins

The Capitol Area Quilt Guild show is this week.

And Teddy won 2 ribbons!    best machine quilting and best original design

I am so excited to get an award for machine quilting because I did the quilting on an antique treadle machine.

I am still not feeling up to par (I could only take a few hours at the quilt show)  but I rally when I get to talk quilts…..I will be doing a presentation for the Tri-County Quilt Guild in Warren MI on Thursday, November 2nd at 10:00 am (First United Methodist Church of Warren 5005 Chicago Road Warren, MI. 48092.
I will be bringing the Teddy quilt to show at that meeting.  (as well as about 25 others)

Happy Quilting

A Full Heart

I am really and truly overwhelmed with all the support you have all given me!  The hundreds of supportive comments from my post yesterday meant so much to me …  My heart is full and I thank you all!

Today I worked on the Teddy Quilt
I had most of the quilting done but had to finish up Teddy.
I needed to add some more shading  and I used crayons….which might seem really odd, but they actually used crayons for tinting quilts way back in the 40’s and they seem to have held up so I am using them here. (and then quilting over it heavily)

I added a lot of treadle quilting to it  after I got the shading done

Next I will wash it (by machine on delicate) then lay it flat to dry, then trim it and square it, and last bind it.   I will use more of the gold silk dupioni fabric for the binding.

It is really pretty large , about 60 inches wide.
I am not sure that Teddy understands that it is him……

He really prefers the quilt in this picture because he is allowed to play rough with it ….

Happy Quilting!

Cartoon Teddy Quilt Finished

I finished the quilting on the Cartoon Teddy quilt for the Quilt Alliance contest.   This is how I imagine Teddy would look if he were to be a cartoon character.

Here it is before binding

I used a very thick poly batting to give him some definition, it shows better on the back.

I used the same fabric for the binding as I did for his bandanna

And gray for the backing

Here is the post about how I drew it out and got started with the embroidery http://timquilts.com/2015/02/13/animals-we-love/

and here is the post about the quilting http://timquilts.com/2015/02/14/quilting-teddy/

I am going to have to make another so I have one to keep because all entries become a donation to the Quilt Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and after a national exhibition tour, will be auctioned to benefit the mission of the organization.

I did draw out another on a different fabric and I think I will finish that one to keep.

Teddy almost always has a bandanna on, here he is yesterday.

Last night it came untied and I didn’t notice it was missing until I looked at the pictures.

Here he is proudly posing with the finished quilt.

He has his ears down in the picture, but often his ears are up, like in the quilt, when he is listening or thinking.

I still need to add a hanging sleeve and label but that will wait until tomorrow .

Now back to work on some of the quilts in the big pile 🙂

Happy quilting

Another Finish

I worked on the quilt for Teddy over the weekend and I finished it Sunday night.

see the post about the quilting here.

Since the hand quilting was very simple It went pretty fast.  Teddy has a favorite toy, a fake dog bone, so I used that for the border design.

Here it is all quilted and before binding.  It is made from the bandanas he gets from the groomer and I kept the piecing simple so they would still look like what they are.    I also kept the quilting on the bandanas very simple, just outlining the pieces .

Here it is after binding.

I used the same fabric for the binding and the backing

here he is trying it out

He seems to like it

Here are a bunch of pictures ….

Finished it just in time for the cold fall weather…..it has been going down to the 30’s and 40’s at night.

Now back to work on my pile of UFO’s

Happy Quilting

Teddy quilt started

I started hand quilting the Teddy quilt.

Teddy is an on top of the quilt guy so I wanted the quilt to be very thick and puffy.   I used an extra loft poly batting.

The backing is a dog bone pattern

As always I pin basted the layers together (very few pins works best for me)

I am hand quilting it with black perle cotton thread #12 and a size 5 embroidery needle. A note about perle cotton thread; it is different than embroidery floss.    Embroidery floss is not a good choice for hand quilting.  The individual strands are not as strong and are not twisted together like they are in perle cotton thread.

I am not marking this.  I am just quilting around the pieces and then adding 3 more rows by eye .

You can see Teddy on the far left checking my work.

He asked if he could sit on it yet

I got his approval.

I did make a few more border pieces for the Batik Quilt.

It wont be too much longer before I get the top finished (I hope)

As promised here are a few pictures from the Basic floral design class I teach. (click pictures to enlarge)
